Mueller retired a few years ago and moved to Florida, but the team still uses his same patterns. In the six decades since then, Leather Man has become a mecca for anyone keen for top-quality custom leather gear, from motorbikers to fetish community mainstays, as well as picky fashion types who pilgrimage here to try on the bespoke pieces. Mueller had no formal design training, though: he took a risk on the business after fielding compliments on his own leather gear-pants and jackets which he had designed and made for himself. They were habitués of joints like the Silver Dollar and the Mineshaft, now-shuttered bars which were pivotal in establishing the area as an LGBTQ+ HQ. It began when Chuck Mueller junked his white-collar office job and opened an atelier aimed at catering to men, like him, who were part of the underground leather scene. The design duo cites classic British designers labels Paul Smith and Ted Baker as inspiration-seen in the bright colors and patterns, plus quirky details like elbow patches. Plus, the buttons are on the right, just like a man’s shirt. Kirrin Finch shirts don’t feature darts like most blouses, giving them a straighter silhouette, and there’s an extra button to prevent gaping at the bust.
That was four years ago, and they’ve now expanded to a full range which includes long- and short-sleeved button-up shirts and bow ties. The name is a nod to the owners’ favorite tomboys from literature: George Kirrin from Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, and To Kill a Mockingbird’s Scout Finch.
The first capsule collection sold out in five hours, and Kirrin Finch was born. Tired of settling for ill-fitting men’s pants, the couple spent a year tweaking the pattern for what became their Windsor Chino, with its extra-deep pockets, mid-weight stretch twill, and colorful accents.
It was during their honeymoon that Laura and Kelly Moffat came up with the idea for this clothing line: they wanted to find better menswear designed expressly for women’s bodies.
